Donald Hutera

Donald-hutera-400-400
He is a dance writer that has spent his life going to see everything, everyone; the emerging, the mid Career, the established. He is now also a dramaturg investing his time and energy to support dance talent. Everyone sees him as just a writer but he is supporting the artists in many ways that are not visible.

Magpie Dance

Founded 33 years ago Magpie Dance is the UKs leading dance charity providing outstanding opportunities for people with learning disabilities from ages 4 to 70+; with a vision that a learning disability should not be a barrier to personal and artistic success. Magpie Dance offers 12 dance programs for participants with a wide range of abilities in a safe environment whilst also allowing them to reach their full potential in dance. Participants gain life, social, health, wellbeing and communication skills.
Alongside regular dance sessions they provide outreach workshops and training opportunities such as with Oxleas NHS Trust for in-patients with dementia, learning disabilities and other complex needs. They also provide training opportunities for dancers with learning disabilities to become peer mentors and ambassadors, valuing progression and individual skills.
Magpie Dance is dedicated to providing varied opportunities including working with visiting artists and renowned companies, technique sessions for those wanting to develop their skills and performance opportunities in both small scale and world renowned venues. In 2017 all of Magpie’s dancers performed on stage at Sadler’s Wells Lilian Bayliss theatre, and most recently in July 2018 they performed in Danceboxxx, a dance platform at The Churchill Theatre Bromley.
Magpie Dance makes a real difference to people’s lives and would therefore be a suitable choice for the People’s Choice award.

Motionhouse - Charge

Charge is the latest touring production by Motionhouse, which premiered in October 2018 at Warwick Arts Centre. Charge melds breath-taking dance with daring circus and acrobatics. Incredible digital projections help draw the audience into the story of electricity in the human body – from the beating of our hearts to the memories we make, electricity is fundamental to all human life.
As one of the UK’s busiest touring companies, Motionhouse is proud to take dance to diverse audiences, giving them the opportunity to experience high quality, inspiring work in their own communities. Charge has unquestionably achieved this: in its first 9 months of touring, it has been performed 47 times in 27 venues in the UK & Europe, seen by more than 18,000 people. Charge has thrilled audiences from Doncaster, Manchester, Salford, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tewksbury, Poole, Leeds, Aberystwyth, Swansea, Keswick and Buxton, to name just a few places, and will continue to tour in autumn ‘18 and spring ‘19.
Motionhouse’s work engages dance lovers and people new to dance. The company works hard to engage with audiences, offering post-show discussions and collecting feedback at every opportunity. The Charge Portal, an online space created to support the production, is an audience-centred resource giving insight into the creation process, the science behind the show, and extensive online teaching resources.
“The most incredible piece of dance I've seen for ages…I want to watch it again!” Audience member

Pawlet Brookes

Pawlet's unreserved drive and passion for what she does is credible and often against the odds! Providing more than a platform for change, recognition of the art form, generosity in offer and stepping outside of the box is a credit to her belief in the work and the people she works with. There is an identifiable glass ceiling for PoC which has not waivered her desires and ambitions to be the best in her field. Her work is far reaching and as a leader in her field, her generosity is a refreshing encounter when looking at building national and international relationships. Going above and beyond and leading with authority is what she does.

Merseyside Dance Inititative (MDI)

Over the last 12 months there have been many challenges for MDI, the largest of which was losing NPO status and regular funding. Despite this the team have continued to provide the people of Merseyside with increased opportunities to take part in high quality dance. Leap 2017 saw the MDI team build a pop up dance venue to test what having a purpose built space for dance in Liverpool could do for local people and the dance sector. Working with Liverpool City Council, MDI were partners in bringing Mark Morris to Liverpool for the World Premier of Pepperland. Since then, the community team have presented work across the region to thousands of people through outdoor performances such as Liverpool Pride, Halloween Lantern Parade, Love New Brighton and with platforms for local groups to take part in such as International Dance Day and U.Dance platform A Night at the Movies and U.Dance NW. MDI have successfully managed to fundraise in order for Leap dance festival to return in 2018 with a great line up of performances, workshops, debates and a conference taking place. There is a new mens dancing group for men over the age of 50, new partnerships with The Brain Charity, research is underway on developing dance audiences through a research grant from Curious Minds and MDI are working with new communities through a number of projects in the Wirral.
