Responsibilities, Strategy and Commitment

All organisations and individuals have some impact on the environment. As an organisation it is our strategy and responsibility to minimise our level of impact, and appropriately control and manage risks of critical incidents.
Environmental Protection Act 1994 - SECT 319

"A person must not carry out any activity that causes, or is likely to cause, environmental harm unless the person takes all reasonable and practicable measures to prevent or minimise the harm."
Compliance

To ensure environmentally responsible behaviour is accepted as an integral part of our operations, we specifically undertake to:
  • Minimise pollution
  • Safely dispose of hazardous waste, trade waste and waste water
  • Safe handling, storage and transport of hazardous waste and dangerous goods (including chemicals)
  • Minimise noise
  • Ensure sustainable land use
  • Minimise air pollution and carbon emissions
Chemicals

Chemicals held on site have been identified as a potential source of environmental damage. As a prevention:
    • All chemicals must be placed in the covered, bunded area of the construction workshop
    • All chemicals are correctly labelled and easily identifiable
    • All containers and drums should be routinely checked to ensure no leakage and good condition
Copies of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for each chemical is available for reference via infopad. See specific chemical handling policies and codes for more information.
Multiskill Centre aims for continuous improvement in environmental protection and sustainability, increased energy and water efficiency, and seeks opportunities for reducing and recycling waste. To do this, we will:

General
    • Investigate ways to reduce consumption or recycle waste
    • Purchase socially responsible ingredients or products where possible
Energy
    • Buy electrical and lighting systems rated as energy efficient
    • Used accredited Green Power if possible
 Water
    • Buy appliances rated as water efficient
    • Buy plumbing devices (e.g. taps) with built-in flow restrictors in kitchen or washing up areas, or add these to existing fittings
Waste
    • Minimise waste by separating compostable items and using compost in the gardens
    • Ensure rubbish bins have sealed lids and ensure no waste is allowed to drain to sewer
    • Promote recycling
Non-Compliance

Disregard to reasonable and sound environmental practices or non-compliance with this policy may result in disciplinary action.
Environmental Protection Act says a person must take all reasonable actions to prevent harm to environment. Does this apply to Managers of the business or ALL employees?
Managers of the business
ALL employees
Is there a correct way to dispose of trade waste such as oil?
I don't know
Put it down the sink
It can go in the sink or rubbish bin
Legislation prescribes specific ways that trade waste products are to be disposed such as oils and fuels, some chemicals and more, so its best to check with a supervisor or the relevant legislation before disposing of all waste products
Select three things that are required to ensure safe chemical storage and handling
Leave chemicals out in the open
Correctly labelled
In a covered, bunded part of workshop
It is fine to leave a container or drum leaking
Routinely checked for leakages
SDS consulted before using a chemical for the first time
Follow SDS instructions for use
I acknowledge that I have read, understand and will abide by the above named policy
