While Marion Polk Food Share always works hard to source and distribute more nutritious food for our neighbors who need it, we are also working to ensure equal access to healthy, nutritious food. For example, our community gardens and youth farm bring people together while producing healthy, fresh food for local neighborhoods.

The sad truth is for many families and seniors facing hunger, tough — even impossible — decisions have to be made every day. Do they buy food or pay rent? Pay for lifesaving prescriptions and medical care or buy essential food? Pay for utilities or buy food? The choices are endless but none of these things should ever have to be sacrificed. Yet 67% of the families we serve reported choosing between food and paying their rent or mortgage, and the same number reported choosing between food and medicine.

Hunger is often hidden right in front of us. It isn’t just affecting our neighbors living in poverty or experiencing homelessness. In fact, a large portion of the people who come to our partners for help are working families, single moms, and seniors living on fixed incomes who just can’t make ends meet. Children and seniors are the most vulnerable, with senior hunger expected to increase by 50% by 2025. Any number of reasons can cause someone to face food insecurity. Whether you realize it or not, you may even have a friend, family member, or neighbor who visits a food bank for help.
