Sharps, Skin Penetration & Biohazards Policy

Purpose

This policy is to assist in the management of sharps, skin penetration and biohazards and outline risks, controls and injury management.

Standard

Multiskill Centre Ltd recognises the danger of being injured by sharps contained in rubbish containers, these include broken glass, metal, and needles. Biological hazards, also known as biohazards could also be a risk. Needle injury and biohazards refer to biological substances that pose a threat to the health of our employees or participants.

Sharp objects such as broken glass, metal cans and the unlikely contact with needles or other waste contaminated may be present at the centre in the toilets used by employees, patrons and participants, in garbage bins or containers for change bags of recycling.

Risk minimisation efforts include:

  • Instruction and signage are provided regarding safe handling and disposal of needles, prevention methods and managing a needle stick injury.
  • Incident reporting of any needle detections on site is required and would be thoroughly investigated.
  • Gloves being available for all employees to wear during tasks that involve any level of risk of sharps or skin penetration injury or biohazard contact.
  • Sharps injury first aid information is included near first aid kits.
  • Guidelines include never holding rubbish bags close to their body or holding the base of rubbish bags.
