The diving gear portrayed in the film is based on a combination of two types - the surface supplied hard hat suit and a self contained diving apparatus as designed by Rouquayrol and Denayrouze in 1865 which had compressed air in tanks on the divers back. The air was supplied to the diver by an early version of the demand valve.The diver did not swim but rather walked across the sea bed as shown by the divers in the film.

It was one of the first films to use underwater cinematography to show the ocean depths in colour. Although the producer went on to become a leading world conservationist this film later faced criticism for some scenes of environmental damage.
